Who We Are
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is a Catholic lay organization founded in Paris in 1833. It is now a global Catholic organization dedicated to serving those in need. Inspired by gospel values, women and men join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service.
What We Do
At St. Mary of the Assumption, SVdP Volunteers:
Assess Needs – Callers seeking assistance, primarily for rent, electric, oil and/or food, leave messages on a confidential phone line in the parish office. The SVdP volunteer listens, remotely, to messages daily, and returns calls within 24 hours. Two members work as a team for a week, usually volunteering every 4 to 6 weeks.
Visit Homes – The two Vincentian volunteers discuss the calls and schedule a visit with the person, as appropriate. Visits are made by two Vincentians, at a day and time convenient to all. They then decide if a financial commitment should be made, and the dollar amount of support to be provided. All payments will be made to the landlord or utility provider.
Meet Monthly – Meetings are held in the parish office the first Tuesday of each month, 7:00-8:30 pm. We open and close the meeting with prayer and we review actions taken and the number of individuals assisted in the previous month.
Financial Support
All financial assistance is possible thanks to the generosity of St. Mary’s parishioners through their donations to the church Poor Boxes and Second Collections. Prayerfully consider supporting the Society with a regular contribution.
